A Dollar Regular
A dollar regular used to be the standard purchase for me at the gas station - but of course, this was years ago. A commercial on t.v. tonight reminded me of the way it "used to be." Pull into the gas station, two attendants came out, one to pump the gas, the other to clean the windshield, both front and back. When the windshields were clean, the customer would be asked if he or she wanted to have the oil and/or water checked, and then the air pressure on the tires would be checked and taken care of. (now you have to pay for that air at the pump) If by chance enough gas was bought to "fill the tank," then sometimes a gift would be given to the customer, for instance, a glass. You never had to get out of the car, just paid the guy, he'd give you change if needed. Such luxury! Gosh, how times have changed. And I've always hated pumping gas - especially when it's cold. Give me a dollar regular - and pump it, please.

Yes, way back when - I remember Texaco attendants wearing the uniforms with hats. I believe a bottle of Coke was a nickel then and you collected S & H Green Stamps at the A & P.
And if you opened a new bank account somewhere, you got a toaster, or some such item, so you shopped for the bank with the best give-away.
And, banks used to pay 5 1/2 percent interest on your savings. You could buy Certificates of Deposit and earn 10 percent on your money! Now, the banks store your money and you're lucky if they don't charge you for doing it.
Even I remember being in the car with you and pulling into the gas station on Newburg Road by St. Agnes and hearing you ask for a dollar regular. I seem to recall you saying that you liked that gas station because they still pumped your gas for you there. Must have been one of the last ones. I also remember the pleasant smell of "regular" gas...used to have a good smell, now not so much. Probably killed quite a few of my brain cells.
