April 3, '74 tornado

This is my best recollection. Dad told me Kevin has his tornado blog on here and I haven't read it yet, so I'll write mine and we'll see if they are the same. Of course, we've talked over the years about it, so there shouldn't be much difference.
To the best of my recollection, that afternoon, Mark, Kevin and I were out in the front yard because Mark and Kevin were playing with toys on the driveway. And Jason Olson, the next-door neighbor was here, too, playing with Mark and Kevin. I was talking to Jason's mother, Linda. I don't remember exactly why we went in the house...maybe word of an approaching storm? Threatening looking sky? Because I don't remember it really storming really a lot right here on Goddard. But I do know Mark, Kevin and I went to the basement. Dad was at work. (We didn't know Brian yet..he probably would have wanted to sit on the porch and watch the storm come roaring in) I had the radio on and never once heard a tornado warning. I remember going up the basement steps and looking out the hallway door and seeing the greenest sky and clouds I'd ever seen, coming back into the basement and thinking someone was getting a heck of a storm because I'd never seen such a green sky out my back door. And of course, it turns out that was right in the Bardstown Road area, Audubon Park area, etc., not far away. But as far as the three of us, I think we stayed in the basement for awhile, but I don't remember hunkering down or anything like that.
Now I'll read Kevin's blog and see what he remembers.

A Response To Brian

I'm not sure Sandy Koufax is ready is come out of retirement. And I don't think a left-handed pitcher is what they need anyway. SO THERE!!! And if you think Dad told me who Sandy Koufax is, well.....think again.

Jill's hand

Jill held up her hand the other day and told us she had three fingers, one pinky, and one thumb. Pretty cute.

My thoughts on Ky's future basketball coach staff

It could be: John Pelphrey of Oklahoma State, since he played 3 seasons at Ky and has coached at Campbellsville & E. Ky. Then there's Jeff Capal of Arkansas in his 3rd season leading the Sooners, or: James Dixon of Arkansas in his 6th season there; this is where I want to coach, he told the reporters in Memphis. Or, John Pelphrey of Pittsburgh, the former UK player's Razerbacks lead the Panthers against Villanova in the NCAA tourney there. OR, James Dixon of Memphis finished 14-16 this season at Oklahoma. That's what I think. I hope there weren't any errors in this.

Presto - another flower block

This one went fairly quickly. Yipeeee!!!!

celebrating Brian's birthday

First of all, Happy Birthday Brian!!! Today's his real 33rd. But we celebrated yesterday and enjoyed having everyone over. I personally thought the pineapple upside cake was a little dry, but maybe it was because I usually put rum in it and left the rum out of it this time. Maybe that made the difference- I don't know. I only have half of the recipe and I wing it every time. But it was good.
Before Beth and Kevin got here, we were in the front yard doing the hula hoop. Erin and Jill had fun with it. Mark and Brian were best - Brian hula hooping with absolute ease. I was the only one who managed to fall down. But I was able to get up by myself, so I guess I'm not too bad off.
Kim watched from the front window. She probably would have fallen, too.

Erin and Jill showed us a few of the steps they've learned at ballet class. What cuties.

It's always fun, fun, fun to celebrate Brian's birthday. Every year Bobby and I reminisce about those first weeks when Brian was in the hospital. And now look- He can do that hula hoop like a pro.

This & That

When I went for a walk the other day, I saw a man unloading his tree and limb debris out of his truck at the corner house at Goddard & Baxter. I can only assume this man cut down a tree and already had pick-up in his area, and in order to get rid of it, brought it to an area that hasn't been picked up yet from the ice storm.

I went to music together with Erin & Jill today; was Erin ever wound up at music. She was certainly enjoying herself, dancing everywhere, singing up a storm, having a good old time. When we got back to their house, Erin and Jill both had fun holding rolly polly bugs and worms, found in the garden; they think the rolly pollys are cute. Kim and Mark have a statue of an angel in the flower garden in front of their house. Jill got a stick with mud on it to paint "little miss muffet's" hair brown. Good name for an angel, I guess. Erin told me how she cried when she had to take her medicine because it tasted so bad, but then her daddy had a plan. Now they put the medicine with honey, and it's not so bad anymore. Then when Kim, Erin, Jill and I were going for a walk, Kim sent them in to go to the potty first. Erin came out dressed in her princess outfit for the walk - frilly costume, beads, pink headband - what a doll. Kim asked Erin if Jill was in the bathroom going to the potty. "No. She's flossing," says Erin. Well, I guess it's easy for Jill to get a little off course.

Last night while I cut out quilt pieces, Bobby folded laundry. Then when Brian stopped by, we asked him if he wanted something to eat, he said no, he was going home to prepare a little something for their dinner because Beth was at jazzercize. Way to go Tabler Men.

I'm not going to proof this. If they're are errors, sorry. But it's cold in this basement.

My Second Quilt Block - finally

Well, it took long enough, but that's because I redid the first block I did. I wasn't happy with it. And I did this one twice. But I've learned from my mistakes, so that's good. The blocks are 12 inch squares, and there will be twelve of them, hopefully, sewn together with multicolored red fabrics cut on the diagonal, also with a flowered border. I'm hoping the rest of the quilt will go a little more quickly, but if it doesn't, it doesn't. And the little blue buttons on the center of the flowers aren't the right size. Each flower center gets a button; I'm going for lime green on these, and smaller blue on the small flowers. But these small blue buttons or a tiny bit too big for the small flowers. I've already removed these. It's great fun working on this quilt. I can't wait to start the next flower block.

A chat with Erin & Jill

I picked Erin & Jill up at pre-school yesterday and brought them to our house for the afternoon. On the way home Erin mentioned that she has a new preschool assistant, Miss Amber. I told her that I bet Miss Amber was very, very nice, and she readily agreed with me that she was. Jill then chimed in, in a laughing, mimi must be silly type voice, "OF COURSE SHE'S VERY VERY NICE. SHE WOULDN'T BE VERY VERY MEAN. SHE'S A TEACHER." And I'm thinking, Oh, sweet Jill...I sure hope you'll be able to feel that way for many many years to come.
Because when I remember Sister Peter Claver or Sister James Alma, let me tell you.....I'd never describe them as very, very nice.

Requiem for the honeybelle minneolas

I visited Pauls yesterday, and not seeing the regular honeybelles, was told the California minneolas that they had would be exactly the same, so I purchased some. Well, let me tell you!!! Was I disappointed this morning when I squeezed these babies. They're thick skinned, and not very juicy, though they do taste good. So until February 2010, I'll just have to make do. It's a hard, hard, life.

an "AMINAL" down there

Our front yard is a complete mess of tunnels because of a mole, or moles doing their handiwork. A week or so ago Mark was pointing out the mounds of dirt to Erin and Jill, explaining that the mole lived down there & was tunneling around underground. Well, yesterday Bobby and I had Jill for the afternoon (poor little Erin is under the weather), and when we got out of the car to come into the house, Jill refused to walk in the grass. She insisted on going out to the street and walking up the walk. The reason she refused to walk in the grass , she told me, is "There's an AMINAL down there." We're not sure what she's picturing in her mind, but believe me, she wasn't about to step foot on that grass. I believe we're going to have to convince her the mole is gone or her daddy is going to have to have another talk with her. Maybe her grandpa is going to have to waterboard some moles. Just kidding - we all know he'd never do anything like that.

Blogging Because Kevin said I have to

Kevin said I haven't blogged for awhile, so I said I'd try to make the mundane things I'd done lately sound interesting. Here goes... When I was in Kroger, I was purchasing Kentucky Kernel Seasoned Salt and their SPECIAL was 2 10OZ. boxes for $3.00. Right next to that was a 22 OZ. box for $2.69. Hmmmm....These specials are somethings else, aren't they?

Last Sunday We had breakfast at Wild Eggs with Dub and Linda, and boy does that restaurant do a wopping business. No wonder they've opened a second location. We could have sat and talked for hours but knew people were waiting for tables. On the 21st we had dinner at the Come Back Inn with Jerry and Cathy Blandford, and this restaurant without a doubt has the best Italian Hot Browns to be found. (this is my paragraph about food) and On Tuesday I had lunch at Marks Feed Store with Kim, Judy, Erin and Jill, and I've never been able to eat an entire Bar-b-Q sandwich there. But darn if Erin didn't down the entire thing, along with corn and some fries. That little girl can really eat, and she's as big as a toothpick.

And this is why I haven't blogged lately.

Quilt Block

I completed my first block of Aunt Millie's Flower Garden and have the second one half done. I'm very pleased with it. Actually the red background is much redder than it appears in this photo. It appears sort of pink here, but is actually very very red. My admiration for the workmanship on the applique quilt Dot did has increased a hundredfold since I've worked on this quilt - and my admiration for Dot's workmanship on anything she did was way way up there - she was such a perfectionist.
